It is the wrong tool for banking, work, government or anything holding money or identity, because losing the inbox means losing the account with no way to recover it.

Yes. A one-time passcode is an ordinary email, so it arrives in a temp mail inbox like any other message. The failure case is not the code, it is the site: some services block known disposable domains at the signup form before anything is ever sent.
